Invitation speech of Daniel Herman, Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic

Dear friends,

It has been my pleasure to assume patronage of the 2nd Prague conference dedicated to Otto Fenichel and his legacy under the title “Psychic Change: Individual – Institutions – Society”. My short therapeutic experience in the Helpline for crisis at the Police Presidium, where I have been working for two years, cannot measure against (be compared to) your profound expertise. Still, it allowed me to understand more fully the meaning of psychological intervention and also to catch a glimpse of the dizzying depth of the human psyche. It is you, psychoanalysts, who are often looking into this abyss and guiding your clients across it. For this, not only my appreciation and my thanks are meant for you.

During totalitarianism, psychoanalysis was often rejected as a bourgeois-decadent therapeutic school and a number of those who wanted to fully engage in it preferred an emigration. I know such people are also among you. Moreover, Otto Fenichel – the central figure of this conference – has repeatedly gone through the experience of exile. The theme of loss of home because of loyalty to one´s own beliefs is one of those I am occupied with for a long time. Also in this regard I feel related to you.

I wish you to take from today’s conference, in addition to new knowledge, also a deepened experience of unity, collegiality and friendship that are so important in every helping profession.
